General Employment

We know that people with education and training, who are in work, are less likely to offend and are more likely to make good citizens. However, having a criminal record poses many challenges to securing employment regardless of how long it has been since the last conviction.

Over the coming months, as we progress the actions of the Working to Change strategy, we will be introducing new supports with our partner agencies all designed to increase access to employment for people with convictions while supporting employers in the process.

Some of the key actions we will undertake immediately include:

  • The establishment of a Department of Justice led Employers’ Forum to assist with the reduction in systemic barriers to employment for people with criminal convictions

  • The development a Safer, Fairer & Inclusive Employment package for employers that promotes the positive recruitment of people with convictions while also safeguarding the rights of each individual
